Mumbai: ‘Trophic Storm Irenes’ are a common sight in India, especially during a cyclone, but the exact cause remains a mystery.
On Tuesday, a tropical storm Irene hit the state of Gujarat, with winds reaching as high as 140 kilometres per hour (100 mph), according to meteorologists.
The storm left many areas of the state without power, with officials warning residents to stay indoors.
The cyclone caused significant damage to houses, roads, power lines and bridges.
More than 1,500 people were injured in the state, according to officials.
The Indian Meteorological Department said Irene brought heavy rain, winds and coastal flooding.
It was moving northeast at a speed of more than 10 kilometres per second (6 mph), and could bring heavy downpours of rain.
India is known for its cyclone season, which ends in March.
