In April, Mapbox announced that the developer behind the popular free-to-play mobile game Heroes of Newerth had been arrested in Russia.
Marta Egorova, who worked at the company from 2009 to 2013, has been charged with two counts of “illegal activities related to the promotion of illegal goods” and “aiding and abetting.”
Egorovas lawyer, Vladimir Malenko, told BuzzFeed News that his client has been detained and faces a preliminary hearing in Russia in the coming days.
Malenko said he was “not aware of any legal proceedings against him,” but said he believed his client would be released “soon.”
Eorgyova is reportedly facing two counts, and Malenko added that “the preliminary hearing will take place in the Russian Federation on April 16th.”
In addition to his role as head of Mapbox’s mobile games business, Egorovic has also worked for other companies, including a Russian online game publisher called “Cave,” which was reportedly bought by a Chinese developer in 2014.
Mapbox was also involved in a lawsuit with the Russian government, which is currently ongoing.
In April 2016, a court in Moscow found Mapbox liable for failing to prevent the spread of malware and “serious violation of state secrecy law” in connection with its Heroes of the Storm app.
A similar case was recently filed against Facebook, in which Facebook was accused of “systematically collecting and storing information about users.”
