India’s Supreme Court has said that if the Supreme Court’s order to declare abortion illegal is enforced, then women should have to give birth to their fetus.
The court has said women are required to undergo an ultrasound to ascertain their unborn child’s gender.
The decision comes as the Supreme Council of Medical Research and Practice is due to submit its report on fetal development and the effects of maternal and fetal drug use.
“The fetus is not only a person.
It is a living person who has its own rights, and its own life.
And the life and death of a pregnant woman must be a matter for the decision of the doctors and nurses,” Justice A.S.K. Verma said while referring to the report.
The Supreme Court had earlier issued a landmark judgement in June that banned abortion in India and forced all doctors and other healthcare workers to undergo training on how to conduct abortions.
In June, the Supreme Courts judgement overturned a controversial law that allowed abortions in cases of rape and incest.
